Yes this happens a lot since that is what a lot of tests are done for. We diagnose conditions/diseases such as cystic fibrosis, immunodeficiencies, porphyria, heart attacks, diabetes, multiple myeloma (a cancer that starts in plasma cells in bone marrow) and we also test all newborn babies in Wales for 4 serious conditions:
Phenylketonuria (PKU)
Congenital hypothyroidism (CHT)
Cystic fibrosis (CF)
Medium chain acyl CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (MCADD)
We also monitor patients with HIV/AIDS and various cancers to see if they are getting better or worse.

Many of the samples I look at show that the patient has cancer – that’s about as serious as you can get.
