I was working as a very junior resident pathologist in the middle of the night and the Professor of Medicine came to discuss a patient’s blood cells. You have to stain the cells to see them. I couldn’t get the staining right. He was very good about it. I still shudder when I think about it. I learnt how to do it properly very soon after that.
This can happen to anyone in any job really – but I was in a lift, talking to a colleague about someone we both knew, and being a bit rude about them. I suddenly realised the person I was talking about was standing behind me… Oh dear…!
