Humans need a wide variety of food in the diet. We are naturally omniverous (i.e. we eat meat and veg). It is possible to die of vitamin A poisoning (someone refused to give up drinking litres of carrot juice and actually turned orange) or through a lack of cholesterol. A balanced diet is the key to healthy living.

At the moment for our population in the UK the changes we need to make are to eat much less, and make sure we have enough Vitamin D. You hear a lot about “good foods” and “bad foods” but a lot of it isn’t supported by any serious scientific evidence.

Sitting down with friends or family to share a meal is one of the happiest experiences I know. Being happy is really good for your health.

I think the healthiest diet is a little bit of everything!

There is no one food which is much healthier than everything else. We need protein, carbohydrates, and fat in a balanced diet, so too much of one of those and not enough of the others can be unhealthy. There are many vitamins and minerals which are needed to keep the body working properly, and these are found in a variety of foods. The key I think is to try and eat a wide variety of things, not too much of one thing – although the occaional treat doesn’t do any harm!
