It’s about 134 million per year, across the world. Do you know how to convert that into the number per second? If you reply with the answer I’ll see if it’s the same answer I got.
One of the things we do in our hospital laboratory is analyse blood specimens from newborn babies. We can detect and treat diseases before they cause serious problems. At the moment we screen for five groups of diseases but we could screen for a lot more. Some research is going on at the moment to see if it’s a good idea to look for more.
I’ve just been to a meeting with people from all over the world comparing which diseases we screen for and why.
