That’s a good question. Most of the time we fight off infections without even feeling ill or noticing them because the antibodies and other immunity got there really quickly and stopped the infection right away. Sometimes though the immune system gets overwhelmed and that’s when we need antibiotics to help, in which case it can take much longer.
Antibodies usually help us get rid of infections. Sometimes the antibodies we produce ourselves cause disease in our own bodies. Luckily this isn’t very common. Our laboratories can detect antibodies and diagnose what’s wrong with people.
